Good Food News - Memphis' Global Café
Much like our past guests from Buffalo's West Side Bazaar, Memphis has begun a food hall where the food is cooked and sold by immigrants and refugees. NPR’s story reports that around 11% of Memphis' population is now made up of immigrants. Global Café was started by Sabine Langer, who is a Swiss immigrant and settled in Memphis in 2012. She was volunteering with the Refugee Empowerment Program when she began to think about how fresh, local food could make a difference in the community at large, and that there were immigrants who were willing and able to help.
The idea she had was for an international food hall that would bring together cuisines from around the world, providing job opportunities for refugees and supplying Memphis' Binghampton neighborhood with healthy food sources. Refugees often get settled in a country with no advance notice and don't have time to learn the language or the customs. Langer says "Being a refugee is much harder than being an immigrant." She tries to employ as many refugees and immigrants as possible.
Folks from the neighborhood and beyond come to Global Café to try authentic, affordable dishes prepared by refugee food entrepreneurs from three different countries. Members of the community now break bread together while learning about other cultures.
